Misdiagnosis

Medical Errors

When someone has been diagnosed with cancer it is a very distressing. It is at these moments we look to our medical professionals to support and treat us in the best way possible. This is usually the case. However there are times when the medical team get it wrong and one of the key areas of negligence is the identification of a suspected cancer or tumour as they are sometimes referred to.

The 3 broad areas of cancer identification error are:

    Misdiagnosis:
Some patients are diagnosed as having cancer when they do not. This can lead to them having to suffer difficult and often painful treatment such as chemotherapy unnecessarily. Patients can also be diagnosed with the wrong cancer.
    Delay in diagnosis:
This can be caused by delayed referral to specialist, delays in carrying out a biopsy or failure to act quickly enough in reaction to test results, as well as many other factors.
    Failure to diagnose:
This can be due to your GP either missing or misinterpreting your symptoms or misinterpreting test results.

It is important that if a tumour is suspected it is quickly and correctly identified and correctly treated.

Main areas for medical mistakes include:

  • X-Ray or scan.
  • Reports, medical records and communication.
  • Wrong drugs prescribed
  • Surgery error
